In 2002, the coalition officially launched the observance at the International Association for the Study of Pain Conference, and by 2003 it had grown to include more than 30 partner organizations.
Over the next few years, the ACPA and its partners released toolkits for groups such as nurses, pharmacists, and older adults, and in 2007 they shifted to a grassroots and media-focused approach to raise awareness and reduce stigma. Additionally, every year, there is now a theme for every celebration. This 2025’s observance is aligned with the broader Global Year theme: “Pain Management, Research, and Education in Low- and Middle-Income Settings.”
